Ten years ago, although I can’t believe that much time has passed, my son made a book for his self-initiated 4-H project. He wrote and illustrated the book himself and I took it to the local school to have the pages laminated and coil-bound.
The book was titled “If I found a penny”, based on the old verse, “Find a penny, pick it up: all the day you’ll have good luck.”
Good luck for the 10-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs fan meant a Stanley Cup win for his favourite team.
Although he paid some credence to his grandpa’s wise words, “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
Still, the hockey jersey he longed for would cost a LOT of saved pennies.
The demise of the Canadian penny was announced in last week’s federal budget. My husband and I searched for and found the old 4-H project in order to refresh our memories.
Finding a penny to pick up is about to become more difficult.
But perhaps that will make the accompanying luck more potent. Our son is still hoping for that Stanley Cup.
